Holding a Coffee Club Meet – 101

Holding a coffee club meet can sometimes be a logistical nightmare…

Imagine having a roaming event where the number of attendees is not guaranteed; then imagine that the people attending arrive whenever they want. That’s just a couple of things that need consideration…and we haven’t started discussing the settling of the bill yet.

In most cases eateries need the details, they want to know at what time and specifically how many people will be attending their establishments; since the coffee club is and always will remain a casual, non-obligatory gathering of people, we dare to challenge establishments and their demands for these details – Simply, because we can’t provide them. Often we have to arrange in advance and let eateries know of our unique situation; it can be quite tedious at times, so it’s nice to have coffee club meets at places that have an infrastructure that’s conducive to having coffee club meets once in a while.

Ecco il Cafe has an extremely coffee club friendly environment, they have a self service counter where you order up front and pay as you go; so people can come and go as they please also there is no hassling with bills at the end. Ecco is still amongst one of my favourite coffee spots as their coffees are excellent, they have delicious food and all at very reasonable prices.

Best of all they always serve with a smile and do just the little extra to make you feel special. Check out the cool chalk board message they made us on our last meet:

2011 – It’s (the real) Ayoba time

Hi all,

It’s me Benny. You’ve probably forgotten about me as it has been a while since I’ve posted anything here.

I can’t believe how quickly time flies! 2010 was the year of the Soccer World Cup, it was a year of hope and excitement. Expectations soared and everyone when not blowing on vuvuzelas chanted “It’s here!”

Well, 2010 has now come and gone and we’ve already held our first Coffee Club meet of 2011 (Held at the Hemelhvijs, 71 Waterkant Street; for anyone who’s interested).

While we look back on 2010 with great fondness, it was not without hiccups. The coffee club was struck a massive blow when our servers blew up – literally. We imagine that it was caused by the huge volumes of traffic that we were generating. We did manage to get our new servers up and running again, but in the wake of disaster lost all the content that we had generated. Try as we might the “Post-World Cup Apathy” prevented us from generating any new content…

It’s a new year and it’s already showing signs of promise, the effects of “Post-World Cup Apathy” are waning – fast; last year may have been the year of kicking balls; but this year, this year my friends is the year of the coffee high!
